What are Arts and Crafts and when was the term coined?

What falls into the category of arts and crafts in todays community? Generally we think of anything we create with our fingers as a spare time activity and arts and crafts. The term Arts and Craft Movement has been coined in the past due 19th century.

Craftsmen created their projects and strove for excellence in their work. These routines were called crafts since many of them were professions under the guild system that was in place at the time. Kids were apprenticed to master craftsmen to learn their skills. This apprenticeship lasted quite a few years and the apprentice has been paid a very low wage. When the teaching was finished, they were capable of placing themselves up in the business to make their living.

Several crafts require skill but everyone can learn a craft by just practicing. Today, universities, community centers, and colleges offer courses to assist you learn these trades. You can have a seminar, day class, or training course. Some Craft stores offer lessons on an on-going basis.

The word craft refers to the product of artistic production to create objects of beauty such as ceramics, glass, textile, metal and wood. Today crafters are combining crafts to produce a new version such as for example using real wood and textiles with document, pictures and more while they are scrapbooking. They produce cards make of cardstock and paper. They decorate cards to use for family and friends.

I have been the recipient of many of the Scrapbooking Cards created by my daughter, Colleen, and her close friends. They use a variety of objects including buttons, bows, card stock, and photos. I look forward to receiving many more in the future.
